South Africa: Hotelier and developer Solomon Kerzner, founder of the Southern Sun Hotel Group, Sun International, and Kerzner International, has died of cancer at his family home in Cape Town, aged 84.

Kerzner’s hospitality career began in 1962, when he bought a small establishment in Durban called The Astra.

He later founded Southern Sun Hotel Group, which by 1983 operated 30 hotels with more than 7,000 rooms.

Kerzner and his late son, Butch, launched One&Only Resorts in 2002, which established properties in The Bahamas, Mexico, Mauritius, The Maldives, South Africa and Dubai. The brand is set to debut in Europe this summer.

Last year, at the International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) in Berlin, Kerzner was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is survived by his children Andrea, Beverly, Brandon, and 10 grandchildren.

Kerzner’s family said he will be buried at a small, private funeral attended by only his immediate family.
