US: hotel development sparks regeneration hopes in Boston, Va

A new boutique hotel is set to open in South Boston, Virginia.

The John Randolph hotel will have 27 rooms spread over three floors, a restaurant and South Boston's first rooftop bar.

Believing that the project will bring tourism and investment to South Boston, the town has been trying to raise fund for the project for several years. The town has now received millions of dollars in grant money and tax credits, including $600,000 from the Tobacco Commission.

South Boston Town Manager Tom Raab told ABC news: "This hotel is [going to] breath new economic vitality to all of the town of South Boston and Halifax County… We're bringing a lot to the table, we're bringing about $5.5 million to the table to a developer who will help us come in and develop this property, which we guess is around an $8 million project."

Building and renovation work will begin in 2018, with a projected opening in Spring 2019.
