US: A local developer is planning a five-storey, 100-room boutique hotel on Mercer island, near Seattle.

The island - a popular summer destination for Seattle residents - has not had a hotel for five years. Now local developer James Cassan of Dollar Development Co. is to build a 100-room hotel next to the Mercer Luxury Apartments and Hotel Suites, another of his projects currently under construction.

The new property will be on the site of a former Travelodge which has been demolished. It will feature a subterranean parking garage with a street level lobby and a second floor pool deck and mezzanine area. Dollar Development has begun discussions with local and national hoteliers about operating the property.

Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce executive director Terry Moreman said: "The city needs a hotel badly, particularly during the busy summer season. "We've missed it. Seattle and Bellevue run out of space. People come over here and they would like to stay here, and we have nowhere for them to stay."
