The Environmental Media Association (EMA) has announced that for the first time they will expand their EMA Green Seal to include hospitality.

This will spotlight hotels and resorts that are joining in the fight to preserve our planet for future generations.

The purpose of the EMA Green Seal for Hospitality is to provide a transparent way to measure the accomplishments of hotels and resorts in lessening their environmental impact. Establishing best practices that are economically viable will result in water and energy savings, a reduction of toxins and role modelling for property guests and employees.

Paul Sposare, executive director of EMA, said: "Having worked in the hotel industry for over 30 years, it has become apparent that travellers want to make lodging choices they can feel good about. EMA is here to assist our hospitality partners in providing their clients with that choice."

To receive the seal, a hotel/resort must meet a minimum threshold of points that are calculated by their commitment to various environmental efforts. Point categories include, but are not limited to, Staff Engagement, Biodiversity Conservation, Waste Management, Water and Energy Efficiency, Paper Products and Disposables, Chemical and Pollution Reduction and Sustainability. Depending on the number of total points met, a hotel/resort can achieve the EMA Green Seal for Hospitality (115 points) or the EMA Gold Seal for Hospitality (200 points).

Recipients of the EMA Green Seal for Hospitality will receive property benefits which include participation in the special EMA Green Rate available for guests to book which gives a percentage of their booking back to EMA, promotion from EMA throughout the year utilizing their media reach and celebrity channels, and a custom EMA Green or Gold Seal for Hospitality (digital, sticker and framed certificate) that can be used for various initiatives.

Montage International is the first hospitality group to have all their properties receive the EMA Green Seal for Hospitality. Montage Beverly Hills, a Forbes Five Star and LEED Gold Certified hotel, was the first recipient, followed by the remaining five Montage Hotels & Resorts properties and two Pendry Hotels & Resorts properties. Each of the properties achieved the highest award, the EMA Gold Seal for Hospitality.

Alan J. Fuerstman, montage international founder, chairman and CEO, added: "We have built an incredible partnership with EMA over the years. I have always been a firm believer that luxury and sustainability can coexist, and I am so proud of our teams across the company for achieving the EMA Gold Seal certification."

Montage Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, will be the home of the EMA IMPACT Summit featuring Jaden Smith, Gina McCarthy, Malin Åkerman and Constance Zimmer taking place on May 29-30, 2019.

"In today's world, what we do locally can create a positive impact on a global level. The EMA Green Seal inspires businesses, from production companies to hotels and resorts, to set an example for change because we all care for our planet, our health and our next generation. Our goal is to have the EMA Green Seal as the global standard for sustainability in many sectors," said Debbie Levin, CEO of EMA.

For nearly 30 years, EMA has harnessed the power of the media and entertainment communities to shine a light on the issues that affect our planet. Prior to expanding to the hospitality industry, EMA played a role in helping studio and production companies minimize their footprint on our planet with initiatives that ranged from recycling bins to hydration stations to paperless sets. The EMA Green Seal for Production, created in 2003, has been awarded to over 1,000 productions, including film and television shows from Disney, Warner Bros., Amazon Studios and FOX, among others, independent and commercial productions as well as live events such as the SAG Awards.
