US: In celebration of Global Handwashing Day, October 15, Hilton will bring its soap recycling program to more than 5,300 hotels across 70 countries worldwide.

In partnership with Clean the World and other soap recycling partners, Hilton's decade-long program has contributed to the donation of more than 11 million new bars of recycled soap to communities in need, leading to a 60 per cent reduction of hygiene-related illnesses.

Four million pounds of waste has also been diverted from landfills.

"In a world where too many children die of hygiene-related illnesses, Hilton and its soap recycling partners are turning guest room waste into life-saving treasure," said Katie Fallon, global head of corporate affairs at Hilton. "We are now expanding our industry-leading, global soap recycling program to all of our brands as part of our commitment to send zero soap to landfill."

The new brand standards will come into effect January 1, 2020, and will be applicable across the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Dominican Republic, United Kingdom, and Europe.

It will help to expand Hilton's impact on struggling communities, as well as contribute to Hilton's larger Travel with Purpose CSR initiative, which indludes the goal of cutting the organisation's environmental footprint in half by 2030.

To educate the public, Hilton will also be opening a pop-up soap museum at Hudson Yards in New York City from October 15 to October 16. The exhibition will feature soap carvings by Daniele Barresi of typically expensive items to illustrate the true value of soap.

The experience will continue to London as well as the Asia Pacific region, so that attendees can learn about the importance of handwashing and soap recycling, and to help fight the epidemic of preventable hygiene-related illnesses.
