US: Moxy Hotels, Marriott International’s experiential hotel brand, has opened the doors to its first hotel in California.

Moxy's creative brand identity aims to engage business and leisure travelers with a warm, thoughtful and playful guest experience.

Vicki Poulos, senior global brand director at Moxy Hotels, said: "Moxy is an audacious and fresh brand that flips the conventional hotel service model on its head to pleasantly surprise travellers, without the exorbitant price tags. What better place to grow our portfolio than in San Diego, a vibrant and playful destination within Southern California."

Developed in partnership with San Diego-based J Street Hospitality and Azul Hospitality Group, the nine-story, 126-room hotel pays homage to the region's storied naval past from a dazzle camouflage wall in the lobby, to a shipping container lining the moody, CrossFit-inspired fitness center, and additional nautical elements such as porthole mirrors and Navy "dungaree" denim headboards in the rooms.

Instead of the traditional hotel lobby, guests check-in at a custom "trike" where they will receive their digital room entry and Bar Moxy's signature "Got Moxy #5" welcome nitro-cocktail served from the lively tricycle. Additional signature elements include the Moxy Digital Guestbook, streaming videos and images taken within Moxy hotels or tagged #atthemoxy, as well as plenty of tech-savvy gathering spaces that encourage guests to get out of their rooms and take advantage of the community-centric ambiance.

Tim Billing, area general manager of Azul Hospitality Group, said: "As with each of its hotels, Moxy tossed out the rulebook and set out to push the envelope with Moxy San Diego. We don't want guests holed up in their rooms, but instead invite them to come play with us and interact with each other in our open floorplan that opens up to the streets of Downtown San Diego via foldaway floor-to-ceiling glass doors."

Each room also features signature Moxy open closet pegboards to hang clothing, unprecedented ultra-fast and free Wi-Fi, 55-inch flat-screen smart TVs programmed with Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and more, and beds framed by an LED-lit platform.
