US: Signature Development Group is to build a West Elm-badged hotel in Oakland’s Uptown neighbourhood.

The developer teamed up with West Elm, the home goods retailer that has branched into operating hotels, and Jordan Real Estate Investments to open a 160-room hotel in a $90 million mixed-use development. The site, at 2401 Broadway, will also include 70 apartments and 15,000 square feet of retail.

"The hotel is going to bring in a lot of people coming and going that will further activate the area," said Mike Ghielmetti, head of Signature Development.

The project is in the planning process with the goal of starting construction early next year and opening in early 2020.

"We feel right at home in Oakland, a city undergoing tremendous change and growth," said Peter Fowler, vice president of West Elm Hospitality. "Its influences are felt in technology companies, a wonderfully diverse maker culture and art scene, and of course, its pioneering food movement."
