Canada: The 106-room Hotel Indigo in Ottawa will reopen next month as the Metcalfe Hotel.
The property’s owners are ending their decade-long affiliation with IHG to start operating independently from February 12.
Patrick Quirouette, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, said the hotel’s owners – an unnamed local family – decided to go independent after seeing boutique hotels in the US that had “successfully positioned their property to capture business from both Baby Boomers and millennials”.
“IHG was a great partner over the past 10 years. Part of the reason we decided to part ways was that the brand awareness wasn’t as strong as we had hoped it would be,” he said.
The Metcalfe Hotel has been envisioned by Ottawa-based design firm 4té, which is overseeing renovations of the property. Plans include upgrading the lobby to make it more inviting to pedestrians walking past the property, which is located at the corner of Metcalfe Street and Laurier Avenue West.
More communal seating in the atrium area is designed to give guests the option of working in a more social environment. Phase one of the renovation will be completed in May, with more extensive guest room renovations planned for 2018.
The building has been the site of several hotels and home to several famous Ottawa residents.
