The 56-room hotel is the first Mama Shelter property in the southern hemisphere. The chain's other hotels are in Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and Los Angeles.

It was designed by architect Jalil Amor, who has "mixed playful contemporary furnishings with modern-yet-homely urban interiors".

The Mama Shelter brand was launched in 2008 by Club Med co-founder Serge Trigano and his two sons.

In October 2014, Accor bought a 35 per cent stake in Mama Shelter.
