US: Ace Hotels has announced plans for two new properties, in Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

The Portland-based company will open the 63-room Ace Pittsburgh hotel in December. Located in a 100-year old former YMCA building in the city's culturally diverse East Liberty neighbourhood.

The Ace New Orleans will be a much bigger property, with 234 rooms, and will be housed in an early 20th-century Greek Revival building. New York City-based design firm Roman and Williams, which is behind the Ace New York hotel, will design its Art Deco interiors.

Opening in mid-2016 launch, the New orleans property will feature a restaurant, a bar, a rooftop swimming pool, and a coffee bar by Stumptown Coffee. It will be located within the 1920s Warehouse District.

Ace currently operates seven properties, in London, LA, Seattle, Palm Springs, Portland, Panama and New York City. A Chicago hotel is also in the pipeline.

Editor's Comment

Ace is one of the coolest hotel brands around - it's not for everyone, but the people who like it, really like it. They identify strongly with the brand and what it represents to them. Part of its appeal is a sense of belonging to a cool club of insiders, an intimate group in which the hotel staff and guests look similar, dress similarly and have similar tastes.

Ace's ambitious expansion plans now include a 234-room property in New Orleans - the move to such a sizeable project raises the question of whether the Ace brand essence will be diluted by applying it to a hotel of this scale. Is the company getting too corporate for some of its hipster clientele? The New Orleans property will be an interesting landmark in Ace's history.

Whatever happens, Ace is not letting the death of co-founder Alex Calderwood and a legal battle with his family affect its momentum, and the industry will be watching it closely over the next couple of years.
