Australia: Hotel operator 8Hotels has opened the 1888 Hotel, its eight property in the city.

The 90-room 1888 Hotel, close to Darling Harbour, has undergone an AUS$30 million redevelopment over the past two years.

8hotels chief executive Paul Fischmann described the property - named after the year it was originally built - as the "most beautiful and unique of our 21 properties".

"It is the culmination of a long and extensive collaboration to develop an exceptional boutique hotel in a wonderful location," he said.

The property has a strong photography theme - 1888 was also the year that the Kodak company started trading. It features a revolving series of Instagram images taken by guests with the company offering a free night to any Instagram user with more than 10,000 followers. The hotel will also run a monthly competition with the guest who has snapped the best Instagram picture winning a free night's stay.
