US: Portuguese operator Group Pestana is opening a 97-room South Beach property on April 8.

The Pestana South Beach Art Deco Hotel is Pestana's first US property, and occupies four buildings, originally constructed between 1940 and 1952, that have been classified by the local historic preservation board. The buildings previously housed the Hotel Milejan Complex.

The revamped property has a strong Art Deco feel, and features 97 guestrooms and suites, as well as a pair of two two-bedroom apartments, and the Mermaid Café and the Pool Bar, which occupies the 1940s-inspired pool deck.

Pestana now has properties in 13 countries. José Roquette, Pestana development director for North America, said: "North America is a very attractive and strategic market for the Group Pestana. This is our first investment in this market and Miami is a natural starting point because it is a gateway for Europe and South America where our brand is quite strong."
