In the latest of a regular series, we check in with leading hoteliers and general managers to get an exclusive glimpse into their careers, their lives and their ambitions. This time, we speak to Guillaume Marly, managing director at Hotel Café Royal.

I enjoy my job because...

It gives me the privilege to contribute in making people happy and giving them an experience, whilst staying or working at the hotel I manage.

I find my job challenging because...

I get involved in all aspects of running a successful business: people (guests and staff), finance, quality, reputation, etc…

My best achievement in business was...

Turning hotels around and making a difference. Every hotel I have managed so far has always improved under my leadership.

What I am yet to accomplish is...

Not sure to be honest. I love what I do every single day and feel blessed, so as long as I keep growing, learning and contributing to our industry, I am happy!

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be...

To speak another two or three languages (beside the ones I already speak).

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be...

Its image: it is an extremely rewarding industry, quite unique in the way it creates a family-like spirit without geographical boundaries. The passion that comes out of its people is mind-blowing.

My top three bucket list items are...

Exploring South America more, improving my snowboarding skills, and taking my children to see the Northern lights this winter for Christmas.

My life philosophy is...

'Everyday day is a good day' – literally!

My favourite song, book or film is...

Song: Time of the season – The Zombies

Book: Count of Monte Cristo – Alexandre Dumas

Film: The night of the hunter – Charles Laughton

My ideal weekend would be...

At my mother’s beach house, in the South West of France (Cap-Ferret) where oysters, excellent wines and good company abound.
