In the latest of a regular series, we check in with leading hoteliers and general managers to get an exclusive glimpse into their careers, their lives and their ambitions. This time, we speak to Emma Castaldo, general manager at The Bermondsey Square Hotel.

I enjoy my job because…

I never experience the same day twice! There is never a dull moment in hotel life.

I find my job challenging because…

It keeps me thinking on my feet, so to speak. The diversity of my role and scope of my job is not your usual GM’s script…

My best achievement in business was…

Becoming general manager at the age of 30. As a female, it came at a time (17 years ago) when the hotel industry was rather difficult to succeed in.

My worst mistake in business was…

Managing a hotel as a hotelier and not as a business… basically service came first, and I did not have the business hat on!

What I am yet to accomplish is…

Balancing work and my personal life.

If I could change one thing about myself, it would be…

Always worrying that I have not given my best.

If I could change one thing about the industry, it would be…

To acknowledge that working in any part of a hotel is a reputable career. The skills required to work in hotels should be identified like any other industry and even more so, as one can be so versatile to cross-work in all departments once experienced.

My top three bucket list items are…

Travel, travel and more travel! To see the wonders of the world and to appreciate some great hotel.

My life philosophy is…

Live life to its fullest.

My favourite song, book or film is…

Song: Andrea Bocelli - Con Te Partiro

Book: A solitary confinement by Robin Sheppard - it's just so inspirational!

Film: I don’t really have favourite, so there's many on the list. But Top Gun is definitely up there.

My ideal weekend would be…

Cooking up an Italian feast with some great vino to share with family and friends.
